SafetyNL is pleased to have this opportunity to provide the Department of Government Services with feedback on a number of important issues. Our submission was prepared in response to a consultation process initiated by the department and administered by EngageNL. The department asked for feedback on possible changes to the Highway Traffic Act. These changes would help keep the legislation current, effective and responsive to evolving road safety issues. The focus was on four key areas: e-bikes, e-scooters and other micro-mobility devices; car and booster seats for children; bicycle safety for children; and regulating driving schools.
Our submission provides recommendations in each of these areas and we added a fifth area: Off-road Vehicle Safety as these vehicles are often seen on public roads in all regions of the province. There are 17 recommendations in total and we invite you to read through the document which has a summary of the recommendations in Appendix B. Not all of the recommendations are related to legislative change, but all are related to improving road safety in the province.
